The BJP may have been on the defensive during the debate on WikiLeaks

The BJP may have been on the defensive during the debate on WikiLeaks and cash-for-vote scam in the Parliament, but that has not prevented the party from continuing to take pot shots at Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.

Referring to Manmohan Singh's remark Advani thinks being prime minister is his birth right and he will have to wait for three and a half years for it, Leader of the Opposition in the Rajya Sabha Arun Jaitley said that the PM's remarks were addressed to Advanai but meant for some one else.

Making an indirect though obvious reference to the Gandhi family, Jaitley said that the Prime Minister was trying to convey this message to the Gandhi family which had a tradition of dynastic rule.

Senior BJP leaders  Sushma Swaraj and Arun Jaitley addressed a press meet and said that budget session Parliament was successful.

Stating that budget session of Parliament was a success, Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Sushma Swaraj said that BJP made sure that even Prime Minister Manmohan Singh was held accountable. "We made sure that government was held accountable," said Jaitley.

Quoting the CVC issue, Swaraj said that it came to its logical end. Adding further to this Jaitley said, "Government could not answer questions satisfactorily on the CVC issue."

After creating immense pressure and emerging victorious with the demand of JPC for the 2G spectrum scam being met, Jaitley said that the government defelected questions on 2G spectrum scam. "JPC should probe the core concerns of the scam."

Some multinational companies are pulling international staff out of Tokyo and surrounding

HONG KONG: Thousands of people desperate to escape Japan's deepening nuclear crisis have inundated private jet companies with requests for evacuation flights, sending prices surging as much as a quarter.

Some multinational companies are pulling international staff out of Tokyo and surrounding areas after low-level radiation reached the metropolis on Tuesday.

Workers are fleeing for Hong Kong, Taiwan, South Korea and as far afield as Australia and the United States as power outages and shortages of basic supplies compound the misery after Friday's 9.0 earthquake and subsequent tsunami.

"I got a request yesterday to fly 14 people from Tokyo to Hong Kong, 5 hour 5 minutes trip. They did not care about price. The charge inflated by 26 percent to more than $160,000," said Jackie Wu, COO of Hong Kong Jet, a newly established private jet subsidiary of China's HNA Group.

"Yesterday, a charter plane from Tokyo to Australia one way, was quoted at $265,000, up 20 percent," Wu added.

Shortages of jet fuel and airport closures were complicating matters in Japan.

Mike Walsh, the CEO of private jet and charter company Asia Jet, said they had run three evacuation flights to Hong Kong from Tokyo by early Wednesday.

"It is now ramping up over last night because of the deteriorating situation. More people are worrying and looking to evacuate from Tokyo," Walsh told Reuters. "We are dealing with over 1,000 people wanting to evacuate from Tokyo this morning."

The company had five A330 aircraft on standby, leaving Hong Kong later on Wednesday, he added.
Airbus A330s can carry almost 300 people each. Metrojet, a Hong Kong based business aviation company, said it had 28 aircraft available for charter, including two Gulfstream G200 aircraft, which carry 10 passengers each.

The G200 cost $5,900 an hour plus airport and other charges. British charter plane broker Air Partner said it was likely to post a better second half as the Japan disaster and political crisis in the Middle East resulted in a surge in demand.

"There has been some significant pieces of business ... We will see the numbers affected in the second half, but we don't know exactly what it is (at the moment)," Chief Executive Mark Briffa told Reuters on Tuesday.

Air Partner, whose 'Ops24' division supplies outsourced flight operations service for passenger and freight flights worldwide, has evacuated more than 12,000 people from these regions since end-January.
Asia Jet's Walsh said large corporations and some non-government organisations made up the bulk of customers.

One more blast at stricken Japan nuclear plant

SOMA: The second hydrogen explosion in three days rocked Japan's stricken Fukushima Dai-ichi nuclear plant Monday, sending a massive column of smoke into the air and wounding six workers. It was not immediately clear how much _ if any _ radiation had been released.

The explosion at the plant's Unit 3, which authorities have been frantically trying to cool following a system failure in the wake of a massive earthquake and tsunami, triggered an order for hundreds of people to stay indoors, said Chief Cabinet Secretary Yukio Edano.

The blast follows a similar explosion Saturday that took place at the plant's Unit 1, which injured four workers and caused mass-evacuations.

Japan's nuclear safety agency said six workers were injured in Monday's explosion but it was not immediately clear how, or whether they were exposed to radiation. They were all conscious, said the agency's Ryohei Shomi.

Earlier, Tokyo Electric Power Co., which operates the reactor, said three workers were injured and seven missing.

The reactor's inner containment vessel holding nuclear rods was intact, Edano said, allaying some fears of the risk to the environment and public. TV footage of the building housing the reactor appeared to show similar damage to Monday's blast, with outer walls shorn off, leaving only a skeletal frame.

More than 180,000 people have evacuated the area in recent days, and up to 160 may have been exposed to radiation.

Earlier Monday, pressure had jumped inside Unit 3, forcing the evacuation of 21 workers. But they returned to work after levels appeared to ease.

2,000 bodies found in northeastern Japan

About 2,000 bodies were found Monday on two shores in Japan's Miyagi prefecture after last week's 9.0-magnitude quake and a massive tsunami, Xinhua reported. About 1,000 bodies were found on a shore in Ojika peninsula and another 1,000 have been spotted on the shore of Minamisanriku town. The Miyagi prefecture in northeast Japan is one of the hardest-hit areas in last Friday's earthquake. The findings will significantly increase the death toll, officials said.

DMK-Congress: Hum Aapke Hain Kaun drama continues

New Delhi/Chennai:  After a morning brimming with speculation, phone calls and political footsie, the Congress and the DMK still haven't kissed and made up. A spokesperson for the DMK said, "The status quo continues." Which means the Hum Aapke Hain Kaun drama - much like the movie - will not head to a climax without testing patience and wills.

What's driving the partners apart is how many seats the Congress should be allowed to contest in the Tamil Nadu elections, scheduled for April 13. The Congress said it wanted 63, three more than the DMK was willing to part with. So over the weekend, the DMK, sounding like a jilted lover, said the party would quit the UPA government at the Centre, where it has 18 MPs and six union ministers. In Tamil Nadu, it is in power with the support of the Congress, which has said that if the alliance wins the state elections, the Congress will need to be included in the government.

On Saturday night, after talks broke down, DMK leaders said "It appears the Congress wants us out" and waited for the Congress to jump to attention. That never happened. So the DMK got more aggressive and announced that its ministers would fly into Delhi yesterday to hand their resignation letters to the Prime Minister. That's when Pranab Mukherjee intervened yesterday on behalf of the Congress, and met with DMK leader Dayanidhi Maran. The DMK announced its resignations were on hold and that the Congress had asked for a day to reconsider its needs. Last night, Sonia Gandhi met with Mr Maran and MK Alagiri, whose father is DMK chief M Karunanidhi.

This morning, the two DMK representatives briefed Mr Karunanidhi over the phone and he is now reviewing the negotiations. Both parties had earlier indicated that they were likely to take a final call on whether to stay together by the end of today. In a sign that the marriage may be saved, Mr Karunanidhi's daughter, Kanimozhi, after arriving in Delhi said, "I am hopeful." Sources in the Tamil Nadu Congress say that both sides may agree to 61 seats for the Congress, but the party's senior leaders in Delhi say a compromise has not been tethered.
