Egypt protests: Mubarak sacks government

CAIRO: Egypt's embattled President Hosni Mubarak on Saturday addressed the nation for the first time since deadly protests erupted against his regime, vowing reform but showing no sign of relaxing his decades-old grip on power.

Four days after angry protesters first took to the street and with at least 27 people killed in subsequent street battles, a stoney-faced Mubarak said he had sacked the government and would pursue economic and political reforms.

"I have asked the government to resign and tomorrow there will be a new government," Mubarak, 82, said on state television as protests raged in Cairo and other cities despite a night-time curfew.

"We will not backtrack on reforms. We will continue with new steps which will ensure the independence of the judiciary and its rulings, and more freedom for citizens," he said.

Protesters who have been demanding Mubarak step down, as well as an end to endemic state corruption and police brutality that have become systematic under his rule, dismissed the speech as too little, too late.

"We don't care if the government resigns, we want him to resign," said demonstrator Khaled, 22, in the Mediterranean port city of Alexandria.

Student Abdo, 20, said: "Prices are still high, the problems are still there, this doesn't solve anything."

Thirteen people died in clashes with police on Friday in the canal city of Suez, at least five in Cairo and two in Mansura, north of the capital, with many fatalities caused by rubber-coated bullets, medics and witnesses said.

Seven more people died on Wednesday and Thursday.

Key allies the United States, Britain and Germany on Friday expressed concern about the violence, with Britain noting that the protesters had "legitimate grievances."

There were also rumblings in Washington that massive US military and economic aid to Egypt, which has a 1979 peace treaty with Israel, might come under review in light of Cairo's suppression of the protests.

Tendulkar named Indian Cricketer of the Year

MUMBAI: Sachin Tendulkar's genius made way for another evening of celebrations as the cricketing fraternity got together to honour him with the Castrol Indian Cricketer of the Year award.

A suburban five-star hotel in Mumbai got decked up on Friday evening as Tendulkar, accompanied by wife Anjali, made a dash to the event that began with the highlights of the year 2009 - when India achieved the status of the World's No. 1 Test team.

"When we reached the No. 1 rank, there were those who thought we'd lose the crown after 30 or 40 days. It's more than a year now and we're still at the top and that's been a great effort on part of the whole team," he said.

While he spoke, teammates Rahul Dravid - special award for 200 Test catches and Virender Sehwag - pocketing the Batsman of the Year award, watched from the audience. Memories of the 2008 Test series win over Australia, the 2009 series wins over England, New Zealand and South Africa and the rising phenomenon of cricket's new world order in the game's oldest format - the recordings of which were shown on giant screens - made the evening.

Tendulkar, the Cricketer of the Year, also walked away with the Test Cricketer of the Year award- an honour that highlighted his extraordinary contribution to the game in the last three years.

He spoke of injuries, the comeback, coach Gary Kirsten's contribution, what it felt like to achieve 50 Test centuries and left the stage with a promise of a 16-year-old that there is still a lot more of Sachin coming our way. "It is the only thing I've known in my life (cricket). So, it feels great to have achieved whatever I have through the game," he said, the humility in his tone intact.

He received a special award for his 50th Test hundred - a record of such magnitude that it still continues to leave the cricketing world spellbound.

Sachin gave a lot of credit to India coach Gary Kirsten for India's batting in the last couple of years even as he spelt out a lot of other names who had contributed at various stages of his career.

India captain MS Dhoni and off-spinner Harbhajan Singh- both couldn't make it to the event - walked away with the ODI Cricketer of the Year award and Bowler of the Year award respectively. Young India bowler Jaidev Unadkat, meanwhile, took home the Junior Cricketer of the Year award, received on his behalf by his father.

Kashmir-Punjab border turns battle zone as BJP's Ekta Yatra marches on

MADHOPUR/JAMMU/SRINAGAR/NEW DELHI: Tension escalated along the Jammu and Kashmir-Punjab border Tuesday as the Bharatiya Janta Party(BJP) began a rally at the Madhopur bridge separating the two states, ignoring a call by home minister P. Chidambaram to abandon the march to Srinagar to hoist the national flag on Republic Day.

Among those expected to address the rally, signalling the determination to go ahead with the plan to unfurl the tricolour at Srinagar's city centre Lal Chowk on Republic Day Wednesday, were top BJP leaders Sushma Swaraj, Arun Jaitley and Ananth Kumar.

The leaders were brought to Madhopur in Punjab on Monday night by Jammu and Kashmir police from Jammu, where they were detained when they arrived at the airport.

The Lakhanpur barrier-Madhopur bridge area, on the border between Jammu and Kashmir and Punjab, resembled a battle-zone on Tuesday morning with hundreds of armed security personnel being deployed.

Armoured vehicles, water-cannon trucks, teargas equipment and riot-control vehicles and personnel were stationed to thwart any attempt by the BJP leaders and activists to enter Jammu and Kashmir. Wired fencing was put up all across the bridge to prevent anyone from crossing it.

Madhopur police have, however, allowed the vehicle 'rath' of BJP leader Anurag Thakur to be parked beyond barricades which will be accompany the bjp workers while their leaders are addressing the rally. Forty members of the core group will walk ahead of the vehicle while another five hundred will walk behind on the way to Srinagar.

India learnt some important lessons in South Africa

JOHANNESBURG: Like all good things, India's tour to South Africa also came to an end with the final ODI in Centurion on Sunday. The tour was a huge success in terms of providing quality cricket, keen contests and fan support. Most of the matches - Tests, ODIs and the one T20 game - saw the teams fight all the way in front of full stadiums. The last one-dayer was in danger of proving to be an anti-climax before Yusuf Pathan rescued it with an incredible knock to give the tour a befitting end.

Cricket South Africa is so happy with the way the tour went that CEO Gerald Majola now wants 'icon status' for all India-South Africa series. "All agree that this was one of the most exciting tours in recent history and was filled with competitive and quality cricket throughout by two of the world's top teams. This has proved conclusively that future tours between South Africa and India should be given icon status, with a minimum of four Tests on offer," Majola said.

6-point formula to win fight against cancer

NEW DELHI: Dr Siddhartha Mukherjee, author of the bestselling 'The Emperor of Maladies: A Biography of Cancer', has a six-point formula to help India control and combat the cancer epidemic.

"Put in place a strong tobacco control programme, initiate sexual health education to prevent sexually transmitted cancers like cervical and oral, encourage vaccination, conduct mammography and screening of vulnerable women for breast cancer and those above the age of 50, start screening for and vaccination against Hepatitis B that causes liver cancer and create centralized systems modelled on comprehensive cancer centres in the US that allow researchers to share data and engage in high quality clinical work," says Mukherjee.

It's simple and achievable advice. But as he says, "The will of the highest authorities is crucial." Currently an assistant professor of medicine at Columbia University, Mukherjee studied in St Columba's School before becoming a Rhodes scholar. With degrees from Stanford University, Oxford and Harvard Medical School, he feels sad when somebody refers to effective and affordable cancer prevention and care as synonymous with the first world.

US ends export controls for India, lifts ban on ISRO, DRDO

The US on Monday cleared the way for the resumption of high technology defense and aerospace exports to India ending a restrictive control mechanism in place since the Pokhran II nuclear tests in 1998. Nine Indian state-owned defense and aerospace companies were taken off the list of entities to which US companies cannot sell dual-use technology – with both civilian and military uses – without their government’s permission.
India is also being placed in a category of countries free to import from the US material that could be used in the construction of missiles or nuclear, chemical and biological weapons, but not verifiably intended for such use.
Though the dismantling of the export controls was announced by President Barack Obama on his November tour of India, it became effective Monday with the publication of a notice updating the US’s Export Administration Regulations.
The third part of the deal – membership for India to international export control regimes such as the Nuclear Suppliers Group and the missile technology control regime, an administration official said, work is under way.
Commerce secretary Gary Locke, whose department made these changes, called them a “significant milestone’ and said “moving forward with export control reforms … will facilitate high technology trade and cooperation”.
But here is what this means, minus the hype and the jargon.
“Indian entities not directly involved in the nuclear weapons program will be able to import a range of dual-use technologies far more easily than they have in the past,” said Ashley Tellis, former US official closely involved with the India-US nuclear deal.A delegation of 24 US companies is going to India with Locke early February in search of such export orders in these same sectors of high-technology defense and aerospace decontrolled on Monday.
It has not been a highly lucrative trade for either country yet – amounting to less than one per cent of the annual turnover of $36 billion. But there is a huge potential here. It is the “greatest market of opportunities”, said an administration official.

Pakistani cricketers must learn from Sachin: Miandad

KARACHI: Former captain and director-general of Pakistan Cricket board(PCB) Javed Miandad has urged Pakistani cricketers to learn from the achievements of Indian batting maestro, Sachin Tendulkar.

Rather than letting their on-field performance speak for them, Miandad feels that the players are happy to brag about their performance in media.

"We keep on reading and hearing about some of the players making claims about how they will deliver, but on field that is not happening and it is a big let down for the nation."

"I would advise them to just focus on their game and go for improvement and take every match seriously. The players need to realise cricket is played on the field.

"They should learn from Sachin who has had a wonderful career and scored century after century but one never hear him making tall claims about his performances or achievements. He is a proper professional and someone our players can learn from," the veteran of 124 Tests insisted.

Miandad also called on captain, Shahid Afridi to take more responsibility as a player and lift the team by example and said that the all-rounder has got enough amount of talent and he should channelise it properly.

"He shouldn't be playing the way he is. Imran Khan is a great example of how a captain should perform.

"Imran lifted the team in the 1992 World Cup. Afridi needs to start doing that himself. He did it during the World T20 Championship so he is perfectly capable of delivering," Miandad said.

He emphasised, "He (Afridi) has immense talent which he does not utilise properly at times."

Urging the players to take the current one-day series against New Zealand seriously Miandad said, "Unfortunately what I noticed was that the players didn't appear serious about their business in the first match in Wellington they took things lightly. In international cricket this is not acceptable."

Pakistan who are currently engaged in an ODI series against Kiwis failed to replicate their performance in Tests against the hosts and lost the series opener by nine wickets after being bowled out for just 124 runs in 37.4 overs.

Adding greater significance to ongoing series in view of the upcoming World Cup, Miandiad reiterated that losing it could have a big impact on their performances in the mega event.

"It is important for the players to realise that once they get into a losing streak it will be difficult for them to come out of it in a high pressure event like the World Cup," the former batsman cautioned.

Kalmadi, Bhanot sacked from CWG OC

New Delhi: In a whiplash of the corruption claims during the hosting of the Commonwealth Games 2010, the event’s chairman Suresh Kalmadi was sacked with immediate effect. Moreover, Kalmadi has been asked to hand over charge to CWG CEO Jarnail Singh.

His close aid Lalit Bhanot has also been removed as Secretary General of CWG Organising Committee.
This came after the new sports minister Ajay Maken took charge and promised quick completion of the issues like the settlement of the overdue bills to foreign firms that had helped in the execution of the opening and closing ceremonies of the mega-event. The decision to remove Kalmadi and Bhanot has been taken by the sports minister in the interest of impartial probe being conducted by the Central Bureau of Investigation.

Gunman shoots 4 officers inside Detroit precinct in US

DETROIT: A gunman opened fire inside a Detroit police precinct on Sunday, wounding four officers including a commander before he was shot and killed by police, authorities said.

The gunman walked in through the precinct's revolving door shortly after 4pm local time and opened fire indiscriminately at officers, police said. The officers fired back, killing the gunman.

"Utter chaos and pandemonium took place," Police chief Ralph Godbee said at a news conference. "We have a number of officers who are shaken up."

Godbee said the gunman has been identified but it was "too early to characterize" him while the investigation was ongoing.

The chief said along with the commander, two sergeants and an officer were wounded, but none appeared to have life threatening injuries.

The commander, who was shot in the back, appeared to be the most seriously wounded. Godbee said he underwent surgery Sunday evening and his prognosis was "very good." A sergeant and an officer who each suffered graze gunshot wounds to the head were both talking and alert, Godbee said.

A female sergeant also was treated and released after her bullet-resistant vest deflected a bullet to the chest, Godbee said.

Police also did not immediately release the names of the wounded officers, saying families had not been notified in all cases.

Yusuf Pathan wins hearts as SA clinch series 3-2

Centurion: Yusuf Pathan slammed a memorable counter-attacking century but was not able to steer India to victory as other Indian batsmen looked in hurry to catch flight back home, putting up a disastrous show to lose the decider fifth and final match by 33 runs as South Africa clinched the five-ODI series 3-2 here at Super Sports Park on Sunday.

Batting first, South Africa made 250/9 in their first innings but India faced a revised target of 268 runs to win by D/L method as the match was curtailed to 46-over per side due to rain intervention. But with no support from Indian top-order, India fizzled out to 234 runs in 40.2 overs to lose a historic chance to win their first-ever ODI series on South African soil.

India began their chase in the erratic fashion as no top-order batsmen including skipper MS Dhoni looked to spend time on the crease and threw their wickets. With eight wickets down for just 119 runs, India looked embracing defeat early in the match.

With all chips down and only tail-enders to support, Pathan decided to cut loose and played a gem of an innings, thumping every opposition bowler with his heavy bat.

Swiss banker sent to jail for Wiki leak

ZURICH: Police will question former banker Rudolf Elmer over possible fresh breaches of Swiss bank law for giving data to WikiLeaks this week, a day after he was found guilty of violating bank secrecy.

Authorities have 48 hours from Elmer's arrest to decide whether they have grounds to hold him in custody for longer, state prosecutor Peter Pellegrini said on Thursday "Elmer was arrested yesterday and will be questioned by us today," Pellegrini said on Thursday.

Elmer helped bring WikiLeaks to prominence three years ago when he used it to publish secret client details. On Monday he handed over new data to the website, which has annoyed US authorities by releasing thousands of confidential state department cables.

Dhoni injured but likely to play crucial match

PORT ELIZABETH: Under MS Dhoni and Gary Kirsten, the Indian cricket team has achieved many firsts, in all forms of the game. It is now on the cusp of another - first-ever ODI series win in South Africa. While Dhoni underplayed the history angle for Friday's clash, it will be a sterling achievement should India pull it off. That will also be the icing on the tour cake after a stirring show in the Test series.

But for all that to happen, the weather has to be at its best behaviour, which it has not been since Thursday morning. A light drizzle was on for the better part of the day and more rain is predicted for Friday. Hopefully, the forecast will remain just that, like in Johannesburg. The met men had predicted a 72 per cent chance of rain on the day the third ODI was to be played. Not a single drop came our way.

Mobile number portability launched

NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Thursday announced pan-India rollout of mobile number portability (MNP), which will allow mobile subscribers to change their service providers, within a telecom circle, while retaining their numbers.
Terming the event “a very important milestone in the evolution of telecommunications” in the country, Dr. Singh said: “It is expected that this service will go a long way in enhancing customer satisfaction. MNP will enable a subscriber to exercise his or her choice and get products and services in accordance with his or her preferences.”
Dr. Singh said: “Affordability has always been an issue for any new service…the service of MNP has been made accessible and affordable to all by keeping the charges as low as Rs.19.”
MNP, he noted, would trigger greater competition. “The telecom service providers will seek to improve the range and quality of their services in order to retain their existing subscribers and also to attract subscribers from other operators.”

PM inducts 3 new ministers, drops none

Congress seized the reshuffle window to rev up its election machine in Uttar Pradesh and Kerala by broadbasing participation from these states in the Union ministry.

The elevation of Salman Khurshid and Sriprakash Jaiswal and induction of Beni Prasad Verma as steel minister have upped the share of UP in the Cabinet to put it on a par with its political heft.
K V Thomas's surprise elevation as food and consumer affairs minister and the filling of Shashi Tharoor's slot is another leg-up for the party in Kerala which takes on the Left Front in May polls. Giving temporary charge of civil aviation to Vyalar Ravi and making K C Venugopal junior minister for power fits the 'Mission Kerala' pattern.

India beat South Africa by 2 wickets

A burst of powerful hitting by Yusuf Pathan spurred India to a thrilling two-wicket win in the third one-day international against South Africa at Newlands on Tuesday.

Chasing a target of 221, India were struggling at 93 for five before Pathan launched a savage assault against South African off-spinners Johan Botha and JP Duminy.

On a pitch where most batsmen found it difficult to play positive strokes, Pathan, making his first appearance in the series, struck 59 off 50 balls as India took a 2-1 lead in the five-match series.

Fast bowler Morne Morkel took three for 26 and fellow paceman Dale Steyn claimed two for 31 but could not stop India from getting home with ten balls to spare. Harbhajan Singh made a crucial 23 not out, including two sixes.

"If I get the ball in my area, I go for it," said Pathan.

Indian captain Mahendra Songh Dhoni said he encouraged the young players in his team to play their natural game.

"We want Yusuf to play the game he plays," said Dhoni.

"As he gets more experience he will turn into a match-finishing batsman."

Proteas captain Graeme Smith said the quality of the pitch had not helped either side's batting.

The match changed dramatically in the 28th over of the Indian innings when Pathan, on six, edged Botha for a four between wicketkeeper AB de Villiers and Smith at slip.

Pathan swept the next delivery and Lonwabo Tsotsobe, running in from the boundary to try to take a catch, misjudged the ball and it went for another four.

In the next over from Duminy, Pathan again swept in the air and Morkel also misjudged the ball in contemplating a catch and another boundary was the result.

Then Pathan struck three sixes off four balls from Botha, all sailing over a fielder at deep mid-wicket.

Pakistan pursuing terror as instrument of state policy: India

India has hit out at Pakistan for pursuing terrorism as an "instrument of state policy", saying such a strategy was "flawed and self-defeating".
Foreign Secretary Nirupama Rao, who is likely to meet her Pakistani counterpart Salman Bashir in Thimphu on the margins of a SAARC Committee meeting, said "Some countries presume that they can pursue terrorism as an instrument of state policy without risks to themselves or to their standing in the international community.
"This is a flawed and self-defeating presumption as the war on terrorism cannot be selective. We have always maintained that a stable and prosperous Pakistan is in India's interest. Pakistan must turn away from using terror-induced coercion as an instrument of policy against India."
Rao, who was delivering a speech at a seminar on 'Asian Security Challenges' asserted that "the epicentre of global terrorism is located in our neighbourhood".

Tendulkar return home immediately

JOHANNESBURG: Sachin Tendulkar's return one-day cricket after an 11-month hiatus has been cut short due to a hamstring injury and the iconic batsman will be replaced by diminutive Parthiv Patel for the remainder of the series against South Africa.

Tendulkar's injury comes a day before the selection committee meeting in Chennai to pick the 15-member squad for the ICC World Cup, starting February 19.

With this, Sachin has become the fourth Indian cricketer to return home due to injury after openers Virender Sehwag, Gautam Gambhir and pacer Praveen Kumar.

Tendulkar had achieved another milestone in his career on Saturday, when he equalled Sanath Jayasuriya's record of being the most capped player in one-day international cricket.

The second ODI against South Africa was Tendulkar's 444th match, the same as Sri Lankan legend Jayasuriya played in his career.

Biggest military deal

If you thought the Rs 42,000 crore project to procure 126 multi-role fighters for the IAF was the "mother of all defence deals", think again. The stage is now being set for an even bigger project—this one worth over Rs 50,000 crore for six new-generation submarines for the Indian Navy.

The Defence Acquisitions Council (DAC), chaired by defence minister A K Antony, has finally decided that three of the six submarines will be constructed at Mazagon Docks (MDL) in Mumbai and one at Hindustan Shipyard Ltd (HSL) in Visakhapatnam, with the help of a foreign collaborator.

"The other two submarines will either be imported from the foreign vendor directly or constructed at a private shipyard in India. Fresh estimates show each of these six diesel-electric submarines will cost almost Rs 8,500 crore," a source said.
